I didn't go beyond the newspaper article which was a huge mistake on my part.  I'm not sure if Dolinger's "family lore" is completely blown, but its credibility is lost with me.  I will always go with solid documentation over family lore.

At about the 1:03 mark the photo is one of Confederates marching through the town square of Frederick, Maryland.  At the 1:05 mark there is a photo of a Confederate POW at Gettysburg.  Here is some interesting information about that POW and the other two with him:
