Society of the Old West

From early westward expansion through the early 20th Century.

As most of you already know, I've switched writing genres and I'm now writing contemporary romance. To that end, I rent a lot of romance movies on Netflix. I watched one last night that also happened to be a western. It was made in 2003 for the Hallmark Channel, and it's called, Love Comes Softly.

Love Comes Softly is the story of a young bride who comes west with her husband. No sooner do they arrive and he is accidentally killed. She's left on her own with no money and winter fast approaching. A young widower, attending her husband's funeral, makes a proposition to her. He needs a woman to help him raise his young daughter. If she'll agree to marry him the next day, before the preacher leaves town for the winter, he'll put her up and he'll give her the money to return home the following spring.

It's a sweet, heartwarming story. Okay, it's a western chick flick, but one well worth watching. It sure beats the heck out of the new Lone Ranger, and all the other junk Hollywood is pumping out these days. So, give it a try, boys. You just might like it.

"Chick Flick?" Love Comes Softly sure sounds like what more then a handful of young widows really went through in the Real Old West to me Gayle. Count me in on watching it as I' m sure the Mrs. will like it too! Is it available on DVD? Bet most these Boy's ain't read any Nora Roberts or Danielle Steele neither! Them girl's can spin a Western Tale to take note of along with Linda Lael Miller. Now that I just "manned up" please excuse me while I wipe my misty eyes, with a well worn hanky - I mean Bandana - and duck for cover. Let er' rip boy's!
