It was near Alila, California, on Feb. 6, 1891 that the Dalton Gang commited their first big crime. a train robbery. It was a train robbery of the Southern Pacific #17. Wearing masks, Bob and Grat jumped into the engine's cab and forced engineer George Radcliff to stop the train. Bill Dalton, using a rifle, then began firing above the heads of the passengers to keep them crouching in their seats, while Grat and Bob forced Radcliff to accompany them to the express car. When Radcliff tried to slip away in the darkness, one of the brothers wheeled around and sent a bullet into his stomach, killing him. Unfortunately for them they couldn't break into the safe. The history of this gang of desperadoes is replete with bungling, idiotic schemes, and failures.
